Percentage to fraction conversion

It is helpful to define percentages and fractions and discuss the reasons for any potential utility in converting between them before discussing percent-to-fraction conversion, which our Percent to Fraction Calculator does.

In everyday life, percentages are seen frequently. They are used to indicate rates and ratios. For instance, a percentage, such as 60%, can be used to represent the ratio of persons who are proficient in percentage calculations to fractions from the entire population. Although opinions on this matter vary, ratios are typically used more in everyday conversation than percentages. Some believe that difficulties learning fractions indicate a mathematical learning disability, while others see percentages as important in science, statistical data, and technical specifications.

Before, percent was called "per cent" and before that, "per centum." "Centum" is Latin for "one hundred." This makes percent a fraction with 100 as the bottom number. A fraction shows something as the same number of parts as another thing.

Converting a percent to a fraction is often helpful. You can do this easily with an online converter. If you can't use our calculator or prefer to do it yourself, see the explanation and example below. You can also use the conversion table for common values.

Percentage to Fraction calculation Examples

This time we will calculate the fractions given as percentages. For this, we will use the rule given above. Let us consider 25 percent in this case. Now first of all we have to divide that number by 100, 25 / 100 = 025. Here it is expressed as a fraction, i.e. the decimal is 4/10. Now the simplification of division is done by simplifying using the value of 25 which is the greatest common factor of the numerator and denominator. Actually, in this case, it is 2, and we will get the answer of 1/4 by dividing both by 2. So here the fraction of 25 percent is 1/4.

Example

Example 1: 25%

Write as fraction:
25
100

GCD of 25 and 100 is 25.

Simplify:
25 ÷ 25
100 ÷ 25
   =
1
4
Result: 25% =
1
4

Example 2: 40%

Write as fraction:
40
100

GCD of 40 and 100 is 20.

Simplify:
40 ÷ 20
100 ÷ 20
   =
2
5
Result: 40% =
2
5

Example 3: 8%

Write as fraction:
8
100

GCD of 8 and 100 is 4.

Simplify:
8 ÷ 4
100 ÷ 4
   =
2
25
Result: 8% =
2
25

Example 4: 125% (Percentage > 100)

Write as fraction:
125
100

GCD of 125 and 100 is 25.

Simplify:
125 ÷ 25
100 ÷ 25
   =
5
4
   = 1
1
4
Result: 125% =
5
4

Example 5: 0.5% (Decimal Percentage)

Write as fraction:
0.5
100

GCD of 125 and 100 is 25.

Eliminate decimal:
0.5 × 10
100 × 10
   =
5
1000

GCD of 5 and 1000 is 5.

Simplify:
5 ÷ 5
1000 ÷ 5
   =
1
200
Result: 0.5% =
1
200

Key Takeaways:
Always divide by 100 after removing the % sign.
Simplify fully for the cleanest fraction.
Decimal percentages: Multiply numerator/denominator by 10, 100, etc., to eliminate decimals before simplifying.
