What is a Root of a Number?
The most preferred and easiest root functions are square root (n = 2) and cube root (n = 3). Cube root is used in angular calculations. The former has many uses in probability theory, mathematics, geometry, physics, and statistics.
The root of a number, specifically the nth root, is a value that, when multiplied by itself n times, equals the original number. The most common roots are:
Square root (represented by √): This is the second root (n = 2) of a number. In other words, it’s the value that you multiply by itself to get the original number. For instance, 4 is the square root of 16 because 4 x 4 = 16.
Cube root (represented by ³√): This is the third root (n = 3) of a number. It’s the value that you multiply by itself three times to get the original number. As an example, 3 is the cube root of 27 because 3 x 3 x 3 = 27.
